Google Business Profile: 10 Fixes That Help You Show Up on Maps
By the Nysia team 路 October 19, 2026
When someone searches "coffee near me" or "electrician in Dallas", the first thing they usually see isn't a list of websites. It's a map with three businesses on it. That little box is called the local pack, and the information in it comes from each business's Google Business Profile.
For a lot of local businesses, that profile brings in more calls than their website. And most of them haven't touched it in years. Here are ten things worth fixing.
1. Claim and verify your profile
It sounds obvious, but plenty of businesses have a profile Google created automatically that nobody owns. Search for your business name, and if you see "Own this business?", claim it. Verification can take a few days, so start now.
2. Pick the right primary category
Your primary category is one of the biggest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Be specific: "Italian restaurant" beats "Restaurant", "Family law attorney" beats "Lawyer". Then add secondary categories for the other things you genuinely do.
3. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same way on your profile, your website, Yelp, Facebook and any directory you're listed on. Inconsistencies make it harder for Google to trust your information.
4. Write a real description
You get 750 characters. Use them to say what you do, who you do it for and where, in plain language. No keyword stuffing, just a clear description a customer would actually want to read.
5. Add your services or products
Most profiles leave this section empty. List each service with a short description. It helps customers, and it gives Google more context about what you offer.
6. Upload real photos, regularly
Photos of your storefront, your team, your work and your products help people choose you over the business next door. Add new ones every month rather than twenty on day one and nothing after.
7. Ask every happy customer for a review
Reviews are one of the most important local ranking factors, and they're what customers read before calling. The easiest way to get more is to ask, every time, with a direct link. Google gives you a short review link in your profile dashboard.
Don't buy reviews or offer rewards for them. It's against Google's rules, and it's not worth the risk.
8. Reply to every review
Thank people for good reviews, and respond calmly and helpfully to bad ones. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews themselves.
9. Keep your hours accurate
Few things lose a customer faster than showing up to a closed door. Update your hours for holidays and special events, and Google will often show "hours updated" to searchers.
10. Post updates
Google lets you publish short posts on your profile: offers, events, new products. They don't take long and they show Google, and customers, that you're active.

Day 2: write your description and add your services.
