Local SEO in Plain English: How to Rank in Your City
By the Nysia team 路 October 23, 2026
Local SEO is everything that helps your business show up when someone nearby searches for what you do. Think "hair salon near me", "accountant in Denver" or "best tacos downtown". For most small businesses, these are the searches that actually bring in customers, and they're easier to win than you might think.
How Google decides who shows up
Google has said publicly that local results come down to three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how close you are to the person searching, or to the place they mentioned.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, online and offline.
You can't move your shop closer to every customer, but you can do a lot about relevance and prominence.
1. Get your Google Business Profile right
Your profile is the box with your name, map pin, reviews and photos. It's often the first thing people see, before your website. Make sure your categories are accurate, your hours are up to date, your services are listed, and you've added real photos of your work, team and premises. 2. Give each service its own page
If your website has one page that says "we do everything", Google has a hard time knowing what you're good at. A separate page for each main service, with a clear title like "Kitchen Remodeling in Austin", helps both Google and your visitors.
Each page should explain what the service is, who it's for, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to get in touch. Write it for people first. If it answers their questions, it usually ranks better too.
3. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Your business details appear in lots of places: your website, Google, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories. If they don't match, for example an old phone number or a different spelling of your name, it can confuse both customers and search engines. Pick one exact version and use it everywhere.
4. Earn reviews, steadily
Reviews are one of the clearest signals of prominence, and they're what convinces people to choose you over the business next door. A steady flow of recent, genuine reviews matters more than a big batch from three years ago. Ask happy customers at the right moment, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, good or bad.
5. Get mentioned around town
Links and mentions from other local websites tell Google you're a real, active part of the community. Sponsoring a local team, joining your chamber of commerce, partnering with nearby businesses or getting featured in local news can all help, and they're good for business anyway.
6. Make your website work on a phone
Most local searches happen on a phone, often when someone needs you soon. Your site should load quickly, show your phone number and address without scrolling, and make it obvious how to book or call.
How long does it take?
Fixing your profile and your service pages can show results within weeks. Building reviews and local mentions takes longer, usually a few months of steady work. The good news is that most of your competitors aren't doing any of this consistently, so steady effort tends to win.
